Trip to Iowa - Lucas's first plane ride

On August 31st, it was Lucas's 6-week birthday, which was the soonest he was eligible for his first set of vaccinations. So Grammy and I took Lucas to the pediatrician to get his first shots and then later in the morning, we headed to the airport to fly back to Iowa. Lucas did very well for his first flights (sleeping during a lot of both flights), but it was still an exhausting day. (And a big thanks to Grammy for all of the help!) We didn't get into Cedar Rapids until late on Monday night, so we ended up going down to my parents' house for the night so that we wouldn't disrupt everyone at the Austins' house.

Trip to Iowa - The 1st Weekend

In late August, Gregg was diagnosed with stage 4 non-small cell squamous cell carcinoma (lung cancer). After his diagnosis, we all flew back to Iowa to spend time with him before he started treatment. It was a very stressful time with lots of uncertainty about what was going to happen, but I hope that our trip there helped to raise spirits and bring some levity.

Chad, Cecilia, Grant, Alan, Gaoder, and Raina flew back on Friday, August 28th so that they could be there as soon as possible. I stayed here with Lucas and my mom until Monday, August 31st so that we could get Lucas's first set of vaccinations before we left. We had to wait until he was 6 weeks old before we could get them, and we decided to err on the side of caution and follow the recommendation of our pediatrician.

These are some photos and videos from the first weekend that Chad, Cecilia, and Grant spent in Iowa.

So happy to see Paca Peanut!

And GG Austin!

Raina is sitting on Grant's head!

We thought that Cecilia might have a UTI, so she had to go to the doctor. Thankfully, she did not have one though!

On Saturday, everyone went to Vinton Iowa to see the "Boomtown" fireworks show. It is an exhibition by the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association. When I asked Chad to describe it, he said, "The best fireworks EVER!" Here's some photos from Boomtown.

On Sunday, all of the Austins went down to my parents' house on the lake after my dad generously offered the use of their boat. My parents' neighbors were hosting a wedding at their house, so after watching the ceremony (with possibly better seats than some of the wedding guests!), they were able to head out on the lake.

On Monday, Grandma Peanut and Chad took the kids to Beaver Park to burn off some energy and get outside. They were able to walk through the little zoo there too, which they loved!
